Commissioner Vassiliou celebrates European winners at the International Rome Film Festival

Three films which received financial support from the MEDIA Programmewere among those honoured at the closing ceremony of the International Rome Film Festivalon 5 November. Hævnen (In a Better World)directed by Susanne Bier received two of the main awards: the Marc'Aurelio Grand Jury Award and the Marc'Aurelio Audience Award for Best Film. Toni Servillo was awarded the Marc'Aurelio Jury Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Una vita tranquilla (A Quiet Life), directed by Claudio Cupellini.

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, attended the festival and said "It really looks like yet another good year for European filmmakers and I congratulate all the winners. Many of the films of this year's festival will soon be in cinemas near you. Go and see them and enjoy them."

Overall, the MEDIA Programme will contribute €755 million of support to Europe's audiovisual industry from 2007 to 2013, with a focus on improving the distribution and promotion of European films and strengthening the competitiveness of the sector.

Ten films supported by the MEDIA Programme played at the International Rome Film Festival. The MEDIA Programme also supports activities related to the festival, such as Business Street (a film market), the New Cinema Network (a forum to foster European co-production of films) and a campaign promoting young European actors.
