UK awarded almost €1.5 million in latest MEDIA funding results

The latest results have been published for MEDIA's Selective Distribution, TV Broadcasting and Continuous Training funding schemes, with €1,431,106 allocated to UK companies.

 

Selective scheme

In the latest set of Selective scheme results, five UK distribution companies received grants to support the release of ten European films in the UK. Artificial Eye received funding for the UK releases of six films, including a €50,000 grant towards the release of Lars von Trier's award-winning Melancholia, and €50,000 for the release of Le Havre, directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The company was also awarded grants for the release of the Dardenne brothers' Le gamin au velo (The Kid with a Bike), Michael, by Markus Schleinzer, Polisse by Maïwenn Le Besco, and The Woman in the Fifth, by Pawel Pawlikowski.

The other successful UK distribution companies are Peccadillo Pictures with a grant of €12,000 for the release of Apflickorna (She Monkeys) directed by Lisa Aschan, and Soda Pictures with a grant of €18,000 for the release of Oslo 31. August (Oslo, August 31st), directed by Joachim Trier. Trinity Filmed Entertainment was awarded €50,000 for the release of De vrais mensonges (Beautiful Lies), directed by Pierre Salvadori and Verve Pictures was awarded €5,500 for La Fée (The Fairy), directed by Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy.

In total, over €5 million was awarded to distributors across Europe to release non-domestic European films theatrically. Four UK films shared over €1m to bolster their release across Europe: Mike Leigh's Another Year, Paddy Considine's Tyrannosaur and Richard Ayoade's Submarine received €291,250 between them, and Phyllida Lloyd's biopic of Margaret Thatcher, The Iron Lady, will be released in 18 European territories with a grant of €853,000 from MEDIA. 

 

TV Broadcasting

From the TV Broadcasting fund, €3,516,813 was awarded across Europe, with two successful UK projects securing nearly 15% of the fund. Tigerlily Films received €63,309 for their documentary Chinese Whispers, and Talent Television secured the largest award granted in this round: €450,000 for their fiction project My Phone Genie

 

Continuous Training 

Under Continuous Training, MEDIA's funding scheme for training providers who deliver continuous vocational training for film and television industry professionals, six UK-based training courses shared a total of €631,297:

These courses will all take place in 2012, along with other supported activities across Europe including the Irish National Training and Employment Authority's 3D Cinema in Europe and the inaugural edition of the Erich Pommer Institut's European TV Drama Series Lab.

 

Access to Markets

MEDIA also published the latest results from the Access to Markets One-Year and Multiannual Contracts schemes (deadlines in June 2011), which fund organisations that propose events and activities (including computer-based information tools) designed to promote European audiovisual works and facilitate access to markets for European professionals. Almost €4m was awarded to such initiatives, including the Berlinale Co-production Market 2012, Cartoon Movie 2012 and Cineuropa, an online portal for the film industry.
