12 MEDIA-funded films in BAFTA nominations

The 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards nominations have been announced, and MEDIA-funded The Artist, directed by Michel Hazanavicius has received 12 nominations. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, also supported by MEDIA, and directed by Tomas Alfredson, has been nominated in 11 categories. Other MEDIA-funded films that have been nominated for multiple awards include The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, We Need to Talk about Kevin, directed by Lynne Ramsay, and Shame, directed by Steve McQueen.

Other MEDIA-supported films in the line-up include Submarine, The Guard, Jane Eyre, Tyrannosaur, Pina, Potiche, and La piel que habito (The Skin I Live In).

The Artist has so far received MEDIA-funding for its distribution in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, enabling more audiences to see the film in these countries. The film is nominated in the following categories: Best Film, Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Make Up & Hair, Costume Design, Sound and Production Design. Michel Hazanavicius is nominated for Director and Jean Dujardin is nominated for Leading Actor. His co-star Bérénice Bejo is nominated for Leading Actress.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is nominated for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound. Tomas Alfredson is nominated for Director and Gary Oldman for Leading Actor. Studio Canal received a grant from MEDIA of €87,000 to aid their promotion of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy while selling it at market stage, and two European distributors, Entertainment One Benelux and Svensk Filmindustri in Sweden, were able to invest MEDIA funding in minimum guarantees for the film.

Meryl Streep is nominated for the Leading Actress award for her performance in The Iron Lady, with her co-star Jim Broadbent picking up a nomination for his role in the film in the Supporting Actor category. Further nominations for this film are Original Screenplay and Make Up & Hair. The Iron Lady received grants totalling €853,000 from MEDIA to bolster its release in 18 European territories.

Lynne Ramsay has been nominated for the Director Award for We Need to Talk about Kevin, which also picks up a nomination for Outstanding British Film and a Leading Actress nomination for Tilda Swinton.

Shame has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, and Michael Fassbender has also been nominated for the Leading Actor award for his role in the film. The film has so far received over €160,000 from MEDIA's Distribution scheme, which was in the form of grants given to distributors in Iceland and Poland, who then invested in minimum guarantees in the film, and a large grant to MK2, the French distributor, to enhance the film's theatrical release there.
