MEDIA-supported award winners and Academy Award contenders

MEDIA Programme support for the European film industry was evident in the results of the 2010 Orange BAFTA awards, with two MEDIA-funded films scooping top prizes. The award for Outstanding British Film went to Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank, which has to date received over €500,000 to strengthen its theatrical release in 13 territories across Europe, as well as support from the i2i Audiovisual scheme. The award for Film Not in the English Language went to Un Prophète (A Prophet), directed by Jacques Audiard, which has received over €1 million from the MEDIA Programme to bolster its theatrical release across Europe. The Leading Actress award went to Carey Mulligan for her performance in An Education, which has also received substantial support from MEDIA to support its distribution in European territories.
Further success for the MEDIA Programme was demonstrated by the prestigious Silver Bear award at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival for Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer, which received MEDIA i2i Audiovisual funding.
Attention now turns to the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, which will be held in the United States on 7 March 2010. Carey Mulligan is nominated for the Actress in a Leading Role category. An Education is also up for the Best Picture and Writing (Adapted Screenplay) awards. In the Loop, directed by Armando Iannucci, is also nominated for the Writing (Adapted Screenplay) award, and has received MEDIA-support for its European theatrical releases. MEDIA-funded films are well represented in the Foreign Language Film section, with three of the titles receiving support: Un prophète (A Prophet), directed by Jacques Audiard, Das Weisse Band (The White Ribbon), directed by Michael Haneke, and La Teta Asustada (The Milk of Sorrow), directed by Claudia Llosa.
Other MEDIA-funded films nominated include The Secret Of Kells, directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey, for the Animated Feature Film award, and Coco Avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel), directed by Anne Fontaine, for Costume Design, Rabbit à la Berlin, directed by Bartek Konopka and Anna Wydra for the Documentary (Short Subject) award and Il Divo, directed by Paolo Sorrentino for the Make-up award.
